The Galapagos Islands Suffer from Eco-Tourism

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

The downside to conservation efforts is that they call attention to the natural beauty of an area and thus attracts tourists. Tourists tell their friends how great their trip was and before long once pristine areas are overrun by hoards of people. This is the problem being experienced in the Galapagos Islands.

The number of visitors is up 250% and commercial flights have increased by 193%. This wouldn’t be all bad if the increased environmental pressures from tourism were stoking the local economy, but estimates show that only about 15% of tourism dollars in the region enter the local economy. As more people move to the area to get their piece of the pie, the pressures mount and the cycle continues.

YouBar. Build Your Own Nutrition Bar

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

There are probably only a few households on Earth that plow through more energy, protein, or sport bars than ours. If they sell it, odds are we’ve tried it. Favorite brands include LaraBar, Clif, PowerBar, Balance, and we try others on occasion. However, even with the almost limitless choices out there, I still tend to get bored.

Seeing an obvious gap in the market for made-to-order bars, YouBar offers a nice selection of ingredients from which to choose. Check off the desired ingredients on their website, place your order, and hand over your $40 (for 12 bars) and you are in business. However, at $3.33 per bar, they are more than three times the cost of a ClifBar. Customization does come with a price.

The Point. Platform for Change Inspired by “The Tipping Point”

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

People often want to make a difference but become overwhelmed by the notion that their individual contribution won’t be enough to move the needle. So why bother? The Point is a new website that serves as an aggregator for those interested in any number of causes.

The beauty of the site it that you don’t have to do anything until a critical mass of people have signed up to support the effort. Once the tipping point is reached, everyone takes action.

Reserve Your HumanCar for $500

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

If you find driving to be a bit too passive for your liking, the HumanCar may be the answer. Designed to work on both human input and electricity, the HumanCar is a highly engineered version of what Fred Flintstone might have driven to work at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company.

The HumanCar is currently being produced in limited runs and those who place pre-orders can expect to wait at least 12 months before taking delivery.

Changing Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles is a Myth

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Ask almost anyone how often they change their oil and they are likely to reply with the standard “every 3,000 miles” rule-of-thumb. This is great for your local mechanic or car dealer, but not so great for the environment, your pocketbook, or your free time.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board found that an overwhelming majority of Californians change their oil every 3,000 miles, even though car makers routinely recommend changes every 5,000 or more miles.

Gore’s Current TV Files for IPO

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

With $36 million in debt and just $2 million in the bank, Current TV has filed for an IPO that is expected to raise $100 million for the company. I’m not sure how a company with $63.7 million in revenues and $17 million in losses gets people to invest but JP Morgan, Pacific Crest, and Lehman Brothers are onboard as underwriters.

Inventor of the Super Soaker Squirt Gun Turns Focus to Renewable Energy

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Having presumably made a large fortune from his invention of the ever-popular Super Soaker, Lonnie Johnson is now taking aim at a revolutionary new way of producing energy. The Johnson Thermo-Electromechanical Conversion System has no moving parts and has been shown to produce energy at a far more efficient rate than solar.

The new system electrodes compress hydrogen at low temperature and expand it at high temperature. The resulting pressure then generates the extremely efficient energy.

Chevy Beats Out BMW, Phoenix, Toyota, & Honda, to Win Green Car Award

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Chevy and the rest of General Motors may be taking a beating with current offerings not doing much to maintain market share, but the future looks bright if the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell is any indication of what’s to come from the General. Chevy beat out offerings from some of the industry heavyweights (and Phoenix Motorcars) to win the 2008 Green Car Vision Award.

The Equinox Fuel Cell is still just a concept but 100 lucky consumers on the coasts are part of a program to test the vehicle in real world conditions. The concept is said to get 200 miles per fueling and can achieve a top speed of 100 miles per hour.
