Changing Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles is a Myth

Ask almost anyone how often they change their oil and they are likely to reply with the standard “every 3,000 miles” rule-of-thumb. This is great for your local mechanic or car dealer, but not so great for the environment, your pocketbook, or your free time.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board found that an overwhelming majority of Californians change their oil every 3,000 miles, even though car makers routinely recommend changes every 5,000 or more miles.
