Congress Approves Ban on Toxins in Children’s Products

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Despite a lack of support from President Bush, Congress has approved a ban on toxins in products designed for children. Set to go into effect in six months, the new law will ban three types of phthalates. If you like a bit of toxins in your goods, don’t worry, as the ban doesn’t take effect until after the holiday season and you can still get your fix of phthalates in products ranging from shampoo to perfume.

Kids are running the show in a lot of families these days and that’s good news for companies producing “green” kids’ products. The little ones are more aware of issues related to the environment and nearly three quarters of them believe in buying recycled paper products. Other findings include:

  • More than 50% of 6 to 8 year olds encourage their parents to buy green products

Cancer. One More Reason Not to Buy Granite Countertops.

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Granite has been going strong for the past decade as a counter material and has now become so common that it’s nearly standard in many communities. As with all home finishes, that means it’s surely near the end of its run as a material of choice and thus I can’t understand why people still install it. Sure it’s decent now, but what about in five or ten years? It will have gone the way of travertine and shiny brass fixtures.

Anyway, if remodeling your home with material that is no longer “cool” isn’t reason enough to look elsewhere, how about the new reports of granite containing cancer causing radon? Most granite is probably perfectly safe, but new versions from exotic locales are showing up with exceedingly high levels of the nasty stuff. One woman found her counters to contain 25 times the amount of radon considered safe by the EPA.

One Fewer. Blowing Up a Range Rover.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Ryan Mickle of San Francisco has decided that his Range Rover Sport is no longer an acceptable form of transportation and is calling on the public for ideas of how to dispose of it for good. Ideas must be environmentally responsible, but destructive enough to insure that the gas guzzler doesn’t land in the hands of someone who will carry on with the polluting ways.

According to officials, city residents use 2.3 billion plastic bags per year and only five percent are recycled, leaving the rest to stuff landfills and litter the city.

There are quite a few wineries that produce organic wine, but going carbon neutral takes a level of commitment that must permeate the entire organization. Located in Mendocino County, Parducci is the first winery in the United States to be certified carbon neutral.

Smock: Designer Wedding & Greeting Cards on Bamboo Paper

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I’m not one to get excited about cards, but the selection from Smock is pretty darn impressive. Printed on custom bamboo paper in Syracuse, these designer cards will surely set you apart from everyone else and their chain store cards.

Bamboo paper is great, but Smock has a few more tricks up their sleeve. All printing is done with vegetable-oil based and low VOC inks, solvents are citrus based, recycling is done throughout the process, retail packaging is biodegrabeable, and more.

Using the dealer locator, I couldn’t find one within 100 miles of our address.
