Bottled Water Backlash Continues
San Francisco banned bottled water at city offices months ago and now the debate has gained attention from the US Conference of Mayors and leaders around the world. According to one group, producing bottled water for Americans requires more than 17 million barrels of oil (not including transport), produces 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, and uses 3 liters of water for every liter bottled.
Some other fun facts:
- American drank 8.8 billion gallons of bottled water in 2007
- Per capita bottled water consumption rose from 20 gallons in 2002 to 29 last year
- Italians drink twice as much water per capita as Americans
