Senate Says “No” to Clean Diesel

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Thanks to strong lobbying from the biodiesel and detergent industries, the Senate has killed the $1 per gallon tax credit that would have provided Tyson Foods and ConocoPhillips with up to $175 million in tax credits. The two companies use beef tallow (fat) to make clean diesel using ConocoPhillips facilities.

Biodiesel manufacturers cite the credit as being unfair and the Soap and Detergent Association argued that prices for tallow would be driven even higher, having already doubled in the past two years.

PETA Looks for More Press by Asking Ben & Jerry’s to Switch to Human Milk. Wish Granted.

Friday, September 26th, 2008

PETA is a master of gaining press coverage by making controversial statements and they have found success again with their latest stunt. The organization has sent the founders of Ben & Jerry’s a letter requesting that the company switch from cow’s milk to human milk in the production of its ice cream.

Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry’s, politely denied the request and will continue producing ice cream the old fashioned way.

Useless Trivia: It takes 12 gallons of cow’s milk to produce one gallon of ice cream.

San Jose Scores New Tesla Plant

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

While the address may be San Jose, the new Tesla plant is going to be on the fringes of the city and is actually closer to being in Milpitas or Alviso. Those poor workers who have to commute along 237 each day are in for a real treat, but at least they will be close to Maria Elena’s for lunch.

On the bright side, city officials did a phenomenal job bringing jobs to the local economy and the financial breaks are a great deal for Tesla. The state is picking up an $8 million sales tax tab and the city is offering a decade of rent-free living, among other things.

Ideas include fueling buses with biodiesel, selling organic cotton shirts, and serving locally grown food backstage.

To help promote the program, Clif has rounded up several artists and is offering an album on iTunes. Though I don’t recognize most of the artists, I first heard Brett Dennen a year ago and he is a winner.
