Clif GreenNotes. Protecting the Places We Play.

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Clif is a new program that helps emerging artists incorporate green practices into their touring. By offering resources and technical assistance, Clif hopes to inspire artists and fans alike. Ideas include fueling buses with biodiesel, selling organic cotton shirts, and serving locally grown food backstage.

To help promote the program, Clif has rounded up several artists and is offering an album on iTunes. Though I don’t recognize most of the artists, I first heard Brett Dennen a year ago and he is a winner.

$40,000 Customized Ed Hardy Smart Car by Project Tattoo

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

As one of the first people of the Smart waiting list, I often kick myself for ultimately deciding to not take delivery of my car. I see them everywhere and it would be nice to have something to zip around in to run errands. For those of you who are proud owners, but maybe looking for just a bit more style, you’ll want to check out the Ed Hardy version by Project Tattoo.

The upgraded version takes the Smart from nice little commuter car to something much louder (obnoxious?) with custom paint, black wheels, a six horsepower increase, and long list of other upgrades. Be warned though, these enhancements take your $15,000 Smart from inexpensive commuter box to $40,000 commuter box, albeit with a bit more “style”.

The Queen’s Green Estate

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Balmoral, The Queen’s weekend pad in Scotland, is a showcase of green features and is completely self-sufficient. A small hydro-electric plant has been installed on the property and generates enough power for the estate and 1,000 homes in the area. In addition to green power, the woodlands have been registered with the Forest Stewardship Council, all farming is registered with the Soil Association, security guards are encouraged to ride bikes instead of drive Range Rovers, and all organic waste is recycled.

Seinfeld Tour to Hit Campuses in Bio-diesel Bus

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the finale of Seinfeld, but it is likely to live on forever in syndication. The comedy is still a top performer on cable and in an effort to keep the momentum going, Sony is visiting college campuses to promote all things Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer.

However, it’s not all about the show. In addition to traveling in a bus powered by bio-diesel, Sony is also encouraging students to join the fight against hunger.

Range Rover Driving Pam Anderson to Open Eco-friendly Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

The details are a bit light, but the former Baywatch star / PETA activist / Tommy Lee arm candy / Kid Rock wife / struggling realty show star / real estate developer known as Pamela Anderson is evidently working on a green hotel in Abu Dhabi.

According to Arabian Business, Anderson was quoted as saying “I’m building a hotel there. It is environmentally friendly. I went there with the Make a Wish Foundation and met some great people there. The royal family was really friendly”.

Saving Wildlife with Kate Hudson’s Shampoo

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Kate Hudson has joined forces with the “King of the Curl” (I don’t make this stuff up) and Wildaid for a line of hair care products made from natural ingredients and not tested on animals. The line is surprisingly affordable and ten percent of all sales go to supporting wildlife conservation via Wildaid.

Eco-Travel: Richard Branson Plans Eco-Resort, Mosquito Island

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I can’t understand why someone would name a resort after the most annoying insect in the world but Richard Branson is planning to do just so. He proclaims the yet-to-be-built resort is going to be the most environmentally-friendly resort in the world and he certainly has the resources to make it happen.

Situated near his famous Necker Island, Mosquito Island is undeveloped at this time but plans call for an ultra-luxury resort where guests retreat to their private villas which are powered by wind and solar.

Brad Pitt to Help Design 5-Star Dubai Hotel

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Evidently jet setting around the world, adopting children, helping to rebuild a section of New Orleans, and playing back-up to Angelina aren’t enough to keep Brad busy these days. He has signed on to help design an 800 room American-themed (not sure what that means) hotel in Dubai.

According to the article, plans call for the property to be environmentally sustainable, but zero details are provided on exactly what that means.

Whale Watching with Hayden Panettiere

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

If you are a Hayden fan, are available in mid-August, and have thousands of dollars burning a hole in your pocket, head over to eBay for your chance to bid on a whale watching excursion and dinner with the star from Heroes. You can even bring along five friends. In addition, the winner and his or her friends will be treated to dinner with Hayden (and her entourage I’m sure) at Eva Longoria’s restaurant in Beverly Hills.

If you need to justify the day with Hayden to your spouse or accountant, rest assured that 100% of the proceeds are going to The Whaleman Foundation.

Ted Turner Partners with NRA for Green Restaurant Initiative

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Gazillionaire Ted Turner is teaming up with the National Restaurant Association (NRA) to launch a green initiative at the organization’s annual conference on Monday. Walking the walk, Turner has turned his Ted’s Montana Grills decidedly green through the use of paper straws, cups made of cornstarch, and menus printed on 100% recycled paper.

The restaurant industry is the largest retail user of energy, using up to five times as much per square foot than other commercial buildings.
