Registration starts in just a few weeks so make sure to add it to your calendar.

Update: We received an email from the marketing firm working on the Lexus Challenge with a bit of clarification. “I wanted to let you know that we’ve made a few changes to the grant/scholarship structure for 2008-2009 based on what we learned the first year. Lexus is still awarding $1 million dollars, but it will be distributed a bit differently. Each of the winning teams in the first three initial challenges (we went from four to three to allow teams more time to complete the challenges) will receive $10,000 each. For the Final Challenge, the 14 first-place teams will share $30,000 each and the two grand-prize-winning teams will each receive $50,000.”

Evian Wants Kids to Drink More Bottled Water

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

As a marketer of bottled water it makes perfect sense that Evian wants to hook ‘em while they’re young. The company has rolled out a new kid-friendly bottle design and is pitching the $5.99 six-pack to parents as a healthy alternative to the sugary drinks often found in lunch bags.

However, leading the next generation of consumers down the bottled water path is not healthy, at least not for the environment. A much better idea is hook your children up with a Sigg. The reusable bottles can be used for years and come in a variety of sizes and colors.

Congress Approves Ban on Toxins in Children’s Products

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Despite a lack of support from President Bush, Congress has approved a ban on toxins in products designed for children. Set to go into effect in six months, the new law will ban three types of phthalates. If you like a bit of toxins in your goods, don’t worry, as the ban doesn’t take effect until after the holiday season and you can still get your fix of phthalates in products ranging from shampoo to perfume.

Kids Pushing Parents to Go Green

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Kids are running the show in a lot of families these days and that’s good news for companies producing “green” kids’ products. The little ones are more aware of issues related to the environment and nearly three quarters of them believe in buying recycled paper products. Other findings include:

  • More than 50% of 6 to 8 year olds encourage their parents to buy green products
  • Hispanic families are more likely to seek out organic product
  • Kids and tweens had $19 billion in personal income last year

Inspired Birthdays: Changing the World One Birthday at a Time

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Nothing gets the parents in the ‘burbs revved up like throwing the annual birthday bash for their prized little one(s). Ranging from the basic Costco pizza and white cake to over-the-top parties to one-up the neighbors, these glutinous affairs are rarely more than a party for the adults with a few kids thrown in for excitement. And the thought of actually learning something at a birthday party, that’s just crazy talk.

Let us introduce Inspired Birthdays, a customized birthday party service built around five themes: Wild Child, Planet Party, Happy Healthy Hoopla, Unwrapping Your Community, and Colors of My World. Regardless of the theme you choose, you can rest assured that the little ones will be in for a good time and be introduced to educational themes in a fun and interactive setting.

The only downside to the service is the cost. A get together for ten kids will set you back at least $1,250, so make sure the invite list is nice and tight.

Pre-Order Itsabelly’s Going Green with Baby

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

This post was originally going to be about Itsabelly, a service to help expecting parents prepare for the arrival of their child. However, I hit their blog and found that the owners of the company are releasing a book about going green with children. The book is set for a summer release but can be pre-ordered by sending an email to Itsabelly.

The book will cover the importance of going green, appropriate products for your baby registry, eco-mom tips (none for pops?), and going green on a budget.

While we’re on the topic, Pangaya is offering steep discounts on organic children’s clothing from Laurenceleste.

Air Pollution is Like Smoking to a Kid’s Lungs

Monday, April 21st, 2008

In some of the more polluted cities around the world telling your kids to go outside for some fresh air might not be the best bit of advice. In the affected areas, air quality is so bad that best-selling author and pediatrician Bill Sears that it’s like the child is smoking.

Nearly 7 million children in the U.S. suffer from asthma and the problem isn’t getting any better. Children are impacted more than adults, as their lungs are still developing and most children spend more time outdoors where exposure is greatest.
